The intention of this activity was to apply depth of field to images captured through a lens and in Photoshop.

The Activity consist of three parts:

  1. DOF Process – with Photoshop CS5 (School of Socrates)
  2. DOF Process – with the Camera
  3. DOF Process – with Photoshop (own taken photo)


The DOF is determined by the subject distance, the lens focal length, and the lens f-number (relative aperture). Except at close-up distances, DOF is approximately determined by the subject magnification and the lens f-number. For a given f-number, increasing the magnification, either by moving closer to the subject or using a lens of greater focal length, decreases the DOF; decreasing magnification increases DOF. For a given subject magnification, increasing the f-number (decreasing the aperture diameter) increases the DOF; decreasing f-number decreases DOF.

Section 1: DOF Process – with Photoshop CS5 (School of Socrates)

The purpose of this activity was to use the image “School of Socrates”and mask and blur out the different regions, to create a replicated Depth of Field image “a la photoshop” (foreground, middle ground and background). Photoshop enables to manipulate depth of field to any picture.

Section 2: DOF Process – with Camera

The task set was to apply depth of field to images captured through a digital camera. I composed three toys on a virtual set. Then I captured with the camera three different focus regions ( foreground dof, middle dof and rear dof).

In order to get different regions sharp, I positioned the camera on a tripod and used the following camera modules:

  • Close up
  • Auto mode
  • Landscape mode

Section 3: DOF Process – Photoshop (with own taken picture)

The last section shows a picture that I took with a digital camera. I duplicated the mouse in the foreground two times and decreased the size of the duplicates. After that, I masked and blurred parts of the picture while other parts are in focus.
